Sixteenth Century Cottage in Surrey, 46 min to London.
Working from Home has been the story of London real estate in 2020. The chi-chi charm of a 3rd floor apartment in Chelsea, Islington or Marble Arch fades when there is no outdoor space and you are negotiating with your partner to a quiet corner to work in. Inner ‘burbs like Twickenham and Wimbledon benefitted from this search for greenery, but the big winners are outer commuter towns like Esher, Godalming and Burnham. I’m not sure this clear-out will last once bosses start requiring office attendance a couple of days a week, and anyway the homogeneity of the ‘burbs can’t really compete with the cultural tapestry of London. However, the trend is strong and today we go a little outside London to a charming cottage in Godalming. Here’s the description for the house:
A very pretty grade II listed cottage, dating back we believe to the late 16th century. The cottage, as you might expect, is full of charm and character, with exposed wall and ceiling timbers, internal latch doors, and a most attractive inglenook fireplace.
Very well maintained. The welcoming dining hall leads to the kitchen, which is fitted with a range of shaker style cupboards, a range cooker, wooden work surfaces and breakfast bar, and a tiled floor. A door leads directly onto the rear courtyard garden. The main bedroom upstairs is a generous size and there is a second bedroom and a modern bathroom suite with free standing roll top bath, a tiled floor and wood panelling.
Situation
Set in a picturesque conservation area, in one of the more historic areas of the town, which leads down to the old Mill and the mainline station beyond. Right in the heart of Godalming, with its semi-pedestrianised High Street, with specialist shops, and an abundance of restaurants and cafes as well as Waitrose and Sainsbury’s supermarkets. A selection of nurseries and schools for all age groups are within walking distance. The mainline station is literally less than a 1 minute walk,(Waterloo 46 minutes) as is the historic High Street. Guildford is about 5 miles away. The surrounding area has plenty of footpaths and riverside walks, ideal for walking and cycling.Outside
A stone pathway from the lane leads to the front door.To the rear of the cottage there is an enclosed courtyard garden with stone paving, providing a delightful setting, with an array of pots and small flower beds. An ideal area to sit out and entertain.£465,000
